About Luxor Tourist Souk and its history
A tourist market in central Luxor.
The Luxor Tourist Souk is a pedestrian shopping street in the centre of Luxor in Upper Egypt, a short distance from Luxor Temple and the Nile corniche. It is known locally as Souk Street and forms part of the city's older traditional market, which was for a long time the centre of everyday trade for residents.
As tourism grew in Luxor, the section nearest the temple came to specialise in goods aimed at visitors. This part was later renovated, paved and partly covered with wooden canopies that give shade from the sun. The section further from the temple keeps its local character, with stalls selling vegetables, fruit, fabrics and household goods to the people of the city.
Shops in the tourist section sell spices, dried hibiscus and herbs, as well as statues and vases made of alabaster, a craft associated with the villages of the west bank. Scarves, galabiyas, cotton goods, papyrus, jewellery and perfume oils are also common. The market provides a living for many traders and craftspeople and shows a side of daily life in Luxor away from its archaeological sites.
