About Luxor Nile Corniche and its history
A promenade along the east bank of the Nile in Luxor.
The Luxor Nile Corniche is a road and promenade running along the east bank of the river through the centre of Luxor in Upper Egypt. It passes several of the city's main landmarks, including Luxor Temple, the Luxor Museum, the Mummification Museum and the historic Winter Palace Hotel, and continues north in the direction of the Karnak temples.
Since the beginning of modern tourism in Luxor the corniche has been tied to river traffic. Cruise boats sailing between Luxor and Aswan moor along it, and ferries and small motor boats leave from its landings to carry residents and visitors to the west bank, where the Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temples of ancient Thebes are located. The corniche has been redeveloped in recent years, including work on the lower walkway beside the water.
The promenade looks out over the Nile, its sailing boats and the Theban hills on the opposite side. Local families walk here in the evening when the heat eases, and the corniche serves as Luxor's riverfront and its main public open space.
