About Dahab Promenade and its history
A seafront walkway on the Gulf of Aqaba in the town of Dahab.
The Dahab Promenade is a pedestrian seafront walkway that follows the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba through the centre of Dahab, a town in South Sinai. It passes through the town's well-known waterfront areas, including Masbat and Mashraba, and curves around the small bay where most tourist activity is concentrated.
Dahab was originally a small Bedouin settlement that depended on fishing. From the later decades of the twentieth century it began to attract backpackers and divers, and simple camps and cafes appeared along the shore. The promenade links them along a single paved route.
On the sea side are cafes and restaurants where customers sit close to the water. On the other side are shops selling Bedouin handicrafts, clothing and diving equipment. The walkway looks across the gulf to the mountains of the Saudi coast on the horizon. Several diving and snorkelling sites lie directly beside it and are entered from the shore. The promenade is the centre of daily life in Dahab and reflects the town's quiet character, which differs from that of the larger Sinai resorts.
