About Blue Lagoon, Dahab and its history
A calm coastal lagoon north of Dahab.
The Blue Lagoon is a shallow coastal lagoon on the Gulf of Aqaba north of Dahab in South Sinai. It lies within the Ras Abu Galum protected area, to the north of the Bedouin settlement there. A sand spit separates it from the open sea, keeping its water calm and clear, with a turquoise colour over the sandy bottom, and it is surrounded by the bare mountains of Sinai.
No paved road reaches it from the town. Visitors usually come by boat from the Blue Hole area, or travel on foot or by camel as far as Abu Galum and continue by four-wheel-drive vehicle along the coastal track. Simple Bedouin camps of huts and shelters stand along the shore.
Visitors swim in the shallow water, and the steady wind and flat surface make the lagoon suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Some stay overnight in the camps, where there is little artificial light and the stars are clearly visible. The site provides a livelihood for the Bedouin families who run the camps and transport, and it is among the quietest coastal spots around Dahab.
