About Bayt al-Umma (Saad Zaghloul Museum) and its history
The Cairo home of the national leader Saad Zaghloul, now a museum.
Bayt al-Umma, meaning the House of the Nation, is the Cairo home of the national leader Saad Zaghloul. It is located in the Mounira area near Qasr al-Aini Street, close to the metro station that bears his name.
Saad Zaghloul built the house at the beginning of the twentieth century and lived there with his wife, Safiya Zaghloul. When he led the Wafd party and the 1919 revolution calling for independence from Britain, the house became a destination for politicians and popular delegations and a centre of the national movement. It was given the name House of the Nation, and Safiya became known as the Mother of the Egyptians. After Saad's death in 1927 his wife continued to live there until she died. The house then passed to the state and was opened as a museum; his mausoleum stands opposite.
The rooms are kept largely as they were, including the reception rooms, study, bedrooms and dining room. Saad Zaghloul's personal belongings are displayed. The house shows the private life of one of the leading figures of the Egyptian national movement.
