About Maamoura Beach and its history
A beach resort area in eastern Alexandria.
Maamoura Beach is a beach and summer resort area on the Mediterranean coast at the eastern edge of Alexandria. It lies beyond the Montaza gardens and before Abu Qir, and belongs to the Montaza district.
Maamoura was established in the middle of the twentieth century as a planned holiday area. It consists of a long sandy beach backed by apartment buildings, chalets, regular streets and gardens. The beach area is managed with gates and entry tickets, which sets it apart from the open beaches along the Alexandria corniche. For many Egyptian families Maamoura is associated with the summer holiday, especially for those coming from Cairo and the cities of the Nile Delta.
A promenade runs along the beach, lined with cafes, restaurants, ice-cream shops and children's amusements. Umbrellas and chairs rented by holidaymakers are set out on the sand. The area is crowded in the summer months and much quieter in winter, when it is used mainly by its permanent residents. Maamoura is an example of the traditional Egyptian seaside resort and part of the history of summer holidaymaking in Alexandria.
