About Yanbu Corniche and its history
A Red Sea waterfront in Yanbu.
Yanbu Corniche is a long waterfront on the Red Sea in the city of Yanbu, in the Madinah Region of western Saudi Arabia. It runs along parts of the shoreline of a city made up of Yanbu al-Bahr, the historic town and old port, and Yanbu Industrial City, which was created in the last quarter of the twentieth century.
For centuries Yanbu was a port serving Madinah, receiving pilgrims and goods. In modern times it became a major industrial centre for oil refining and petrochemicals, managed by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. This change was accompanied by organised urban planning, which included building seafronts and large parks along the coast with lawns, footpaths, seating areas and play equipment.
Residents use the corniche for walking, exercise and evenings out with their families. The waters of Yanbu are known for their coral reefs, which have made the city a destination for divers. It offers open public space in a place dominated by industry, and it connects present-day Yanbu with its much older history as a seaport.
