About Umluj Corniche and its history
The waterfront of the town of Umluj.
Umluj Corniche is a waterfront along the Red Sea in the town of Umluj, the centre of the governorate of the same name in the Tabuk Region of Saudi Arabia. It is the main outdoor public space for the town's residents and links the seaside neighbourhoods with the fishing harbour.
Umluj grew up as a small coastal town whose people lived from fishing and sea trade, and fishing boats still use its harbour every day. As the town expanded, the coastal strip was developed into a public promenade with walking paths, green areas, shaded seating and children's playgrounds. The governorate is also known for the mangoes grown on its inland farms and for the nearby islands that attract visitors.
Residents and visitors come to the corniche to walk and sit facing the sea, especially in the evening when the heat eases. Restaurants and cafés are found along its length, and many of them serve fresh fish. Boats heading for the islands leave from the adjoining harbour. The corniche has a clear social role in a small town such as Umluj.
