About Prince Turki Street and its history
A main street running beside the Khobar Corniche.
Prince Turki Street is a main road in the city of Khobar, in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, running alongside the waterfront on the Arabian Gulf, which is why residents commonly call it Corniche Street. It separates the corniche gardens on the seaward side from the residential and commercial districts inland.
The street took shape as Khobar spread along the coast in the second half of the twentieth century. The city began as a small fishing village and was transformed by the oil industry in neighbouring Dhahran into a commercial centre with planned streets; its built-up area then extended north and south along the sea. As the corniche was laid out and improved, the road beside it grew in importance.
The inland side of the street is lined with restaurants, cafes, shops, hotels and shopping complexes, while the other side faces the lawns and footpaths of the corniche. Traffic is heavy in the evenings and at weekends, when the street draws people from Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran. It is one of the main axes of social life and leisure in Khobar.
