About Ras Tanura Beach and its history
A Gulf beach at Ras Tanura.
Ras Tanura Beach is a beach on the Arabian Gulf in the city of Ras Tanura, in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. The city lies on a sandy spit projecting into the sea north of Dammam and Qatif and its shores are marked by pale sand and calm, shallow water.
The name of Ras Tanura has been associated with the oil industry since the 1940s, when a refinery and an export terminal were built there; both rank among the largest oil installations in the world. A residential town grew up around these facilities for the people employed there and their families. The municipality has prepared sections of the shore for public use and equipped them with facilities.
The public beach has shaded shelters, seating, footpaths, children's playgrounds and planted areas, and people go there to swim, stroll, fish and sit on the sand. At weekends and during the Eid holidays it receives visitors from Jubail, Dammam, Qatif and other towns in the region. The beach is the main natural open space in Ras Tanura and shows a different side of a city known above all for its industrial role.
