About Matbouli House Museum and its history
A traditional Hejazi house in Historic Jeddah, around four centuries old, with wooden rawashin facades, now a museum.
Matbouli House is a traditional Hejazi house in Al-Balad, the historic centre of Jeddah, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. The house is around four centuries old and is named after the Matbouli family, one of the city's old merchant families. It has been turned into a museum presenting the way of life of Jeddah's inhabitants in earlier times.
The house was built in the manner common to the towns of the Hejaz coast. Its walls are of coral stone taken from the Red Sea shore, with horizontal wooden beams set into them to strengthen the structure. The facades are covered with rawashin, projecting wooden balconies with turned and carved latticework that let in air and light. The house has several storeys.
Visitors walk through the rooms and sitting areas, which are furnished with old furniture and display household utensils, antiques and items belonging to the family or to daily life in Jeddah before modern development. The house is among the oldest in Historic Jeddah open to visitors and is a preserved example of its domestic architecture.
