About Jazan Corniche and its history
A Red Sea waterfront in Jazan.
Jazan Corniche is a waterfront along the Red Sea in the city of Jazan, capital of the Jazan Region in the far south-west of Saudi Arabia. It consists of two main sections, known as the Northern Corniche and the Southern Corniche, which extend on either side of the city centre and its port.
Jazan is an old coastal city whose life has long been tied to the sea. It was a harbour for trade with other Red Sea ports and a centre for fishing. Its port is still one of the kingdom's important ports on this coast, and the ferries to the Farasan Islands depart from it. As the city grew, the coastal strip was developed with footpaths, lawns, shaded seating, children's playgrounds and spaces for events. The Heritage Village stands on the Southern Corniche.
Residents use the corniche mostly in the evening, when the heat typical of the coastal Tihama climate eases. Restaurants and cafés are found along its length, and the cooking of the region is known for fish dishes and traditional foods prepared in clay pots. The corniche hosts many of the activities of the winter festival held by the region.
