About Hurghada Tourist Promenade and its history

A tourist promenade in Hurghada.

The Hurghada Tourist Promenade, known locally as El Mamsha, is a long avenue with wide pedestrian pavements in the hotel district in the south of Hurghada, on Egypt's Red Sea coast. It extends for several kilometres parallel to the shore and is separated from the sea by rows of hotels and holiday villages.

Until the second half of the twentieth century Hurghada was a small town that depended on fishing. It then grew rapidly into one of Egypt's main beach destinations, and development spread southwards along the coast. The promenade was built as part of the planning of the new tourist area, as an axis for walking and shopping serving hotel guests and residents, away from the old town centre in El Dahar and the Sakkala district.

Restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, gift and clothing shops, pharmacies and offices selling boat trips line both sides of the promenade. It is busiest in the evening, when visitors come out to walk after a day at the beach. The promenade is one of the main public spaces of modern Hurghada and a centre of its commercial and leisure activity.
