About Aswan Old Souk and its history

A market in central Aswan known for spices and Nubian goods.

Aswan Old Souk is a long market street in the centre of Aswan in southern Egypt. It runs parallel to the Nile corniche, a few blocks inland, starting near the railway station and continuing south.

Throughout its history Aswan was Egypt's southern gateway and a stopping point for trade arriving from Sudan and the African interior. This is reflected in the market, which brings together Egyptian, Nubian and African goods. The street has been renovated and most of it is reserved for pedestrians while it continues to function as an everyday market for the people of the city.

The souk is known for spices and herbs displayed in sacks and baskets, and for dried hibiscus, peanuts, dates and henna, all products associated with the region. Nubian goods are also sold, including baskets and trays woven from coloured palm fibre, caps and jewellery, along with perfume oils, fabrics and galabiyas. The market is busiest in the evening, when temperatures fall. It is one of the main centres of economic and social life in Aswan and a meeting place for residents and visitors.
