About Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) and its history
A high cliff on the Tuwaiq escarpment north-west of Riyadh, overlooking a vast plain.
The Edge of the World, also known as Jebel Fihrayn, is a high cliff on the Tuwaiq escarpment in the Riyadh Region, north-west of the capital and roughly two hours from it by car. The cliff rises hundreds of metres above a flat desert plain that stretches to the horizon, and it is this view that gave the site its popular name.
The site is part of the Tuwaiq mountains, a chain of sedimentary escarpments that runs in an arc for hundreds of kilometres through central Arabia. Its limestone was laid down on the floor of an ancient sea that once covered the region, and marine fossils are found in its layers.
Visitors reach the place by unpaved desert tracks that require four-wheel-drive vehicles, and then walk along the rim and out to the rock spurs that project from it. It is frequented by hikers, campers and people who come to watch the sunset, especially during the mild winter months. The site is one of the best-known natural landmarks near Riyadh.
