About Jeddah Open-Air Sculpture Museum and its history
A collection of sculptures displayed outdoors along the Jeddah Corniche.
The Jeddah Open-Air Sculpture Museum is a collection of sculptures displayed outdoors on the Jeddah Corniche beside the Red Sea, in the Al-Hamra district. It includes works by several of the leading international sculptors of the twentieth century, together with works by Arab artists.
The collection goes back to a city beautification programme carried out in the 1970s and 1980s under the mayor of Jeddah, Mohamed Said Farsi. Hundreds of sculptures were acquired and placed in the city's squares, streets and seafront. After decades of exposure to the humidity and salt of the sea, a number of the most important pieces were restored in the 2010s and brought together in a single park on the corniche.
In the park visitors see sculptures in bronze, steel and stone by artists including Henry Moore, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Jean Arp and Victor Vasarely, set among lawns and footpaths. The collection is one of the most important groups of modern sculpture on public display in the region and a part of Jeddah's urban identity.
