About Harrat Viewpoint and its history
A high viewpoint on the edge of the lava field overlooking the AlUla valley.
Harrat Viewpoint is an elevated lookout on the edge of Harrat Uwayrid, a broad volcanic plateau of black basalt that rises to the west of the AlUla valley in the Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia.
The plateau was formed by lava flows that spread over much older layers of sandstone, which is why the dark basalt on top contrasts so clearly with the red and yellow rock below. A paved road now climbs from the valley to the rim, where viewing platforms, seating areas and places to eat have been built.
From the lookout, visitors can see the palm groves that run along the valley, the Old Town of AlUla and archaeological areas such as Dadan. Many people come at sunset, when the colours of the rock change, and after dark for the clear night sky. The viewpoint is one of the simplest ways to understand the geography of AlUla, because it shows in a single view both the oasis that has supported settlement for thousands of years and the landforms that surround and shelter it.
