About Jawatha Park and its history
A public park in north-eastern Al-Ahsa.
Jawatha Park is a public park in the north-eastern part of the Al-Ahsa oasis in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, not far from the city of Hofuf. It takes its name from the historic locality of Jawatha beside it.
The area is best known for the nearby Jawatha Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in eastern Arabia, whose construction is attributed to the Bani Abd al-Qays tribe, who lived in the region in the earliest years of Islam. Tradition holds that the first Friday prayer performed after the one in the Prophet's Mosque in Medina took place here. The park itself is a modern creation, laid out as a public open space for the people of the oasis and to serve visitors to the archaeological site.
The park has lawns, trees, shaded shelters, seating areas and children's playgrounds, and it is bordered by sand dunes that attract people who enjoy desert outings. It is busiest in winter and in the evenings, when the weather is mild and families gather there for picnics. Together with the historic mosque, the park is a familiar stop for visitors to Al-Ahsa.
