About Agiba Beach and its history
A beach west of Marsa Matruh framed by rocky cliffs.
Agiba Beach is a small cove on the Mediterranean coast west of Marsa Matruh in north-western Egypt, around twenty kilometres from the city. The beach lies at the foot of a high rocky plateau, so that cliffs enclose it on three sides. Its name comes from the Arabic word for wonder, a reference to the appearance of the place.
The coast in this area is made of limestone that has been shaped over time by waves and wind, producing caves, hollows and rocky headlands that project into the sea. The Matruh coast in general is known for its clear water, which ranges from turquoise to deep blue, and for its fine white sand. These features are clearly seen at Agiba.
Visitors reach the beach from the top of the plateau by steps and a path that descends to the sand, and many stop at the upper edge to look at the cove from above. The sandy beach itself is small, and on some days the sea is rough and swimming is restricted. Agiba is one of the best-known natural landmarks of Marsa Matruh and a regular stop for summer holidaymakers touring the beaches west of the city.
