About Andalus Garden and its history
A Nile-side garden on Gezira laid out in Andalusian style.
Andalus Garden is a historic public garden on the bank of the Nile at the southern end of Gezira Island in Cairo, near Qasr al-Nil Bridge and the Cairo Opera House.
The garden was laid out in the 1930s, at a time when Cairo saw interest in reviving Arab and Islamic styles in architecture and landscape design. It was later registered as a protected monument because of its historical and artistic value, and it has undergone restoration to preserve its original features.
The garden is made up of sections on different levels. The Andalusian section has water basins, fountains, and benches and walls faced with coloured ceramic tiles, together with walkways covered by pergolas resting on columns and flower beds arranged in a symmetrical geometric pattern. Another section contains elements of Pharaonic character, including replica statues and palm trees. A statue of Ahmed Shawqi, known as the Prince of Poets, stands in the garden. The garden is one of the leading examples of historic landscape design in Cairo and provides a quiet space facing the river in the centre of the capital.
